How to make Instant Pot Swiss Steak
- In a Ziploc bag, combine your flour, seasoning salt, and pepper.
- Cut your meat into smaller pieces and place the steak pieces into the bag with the flour.
- Close and shake the bag well to coat all of the meat pieces.
- Set your instant pot to saute and wait until it reads “hot”
- Pour 3 tbs of cooking oil into the pressure cooker and make sure that it remains “hot”
- Now place your steak pieces into the hot oil and allow it to cook for 2-3 minutes per side
- When the steak is brown, remove the pieces and turn the instant pot off.
- Pour your can stewed tomatoes and your beef broth into the pressure cooker and scrape everything that is stuck to the sides and bottom. This is called deglazing and is a necessary step to remove all of the stuck pieces. Thankfully, they should all come up easily with a wooden spoon or scraper.

- Add the veggies to the pressure cooker
- Place the lid on your pressure cooker and set it to cook on pressure cook manual high for 25 minutes with a 10-minute natural release.
- You can serve this Swiss Steak over rice or with potatoes if you choose.
How to Brown Beef in your Pressure Cooker / Instant Pot
Browning Beef in your Pressure Cooker is easy to do using the Saute' button.

Place your seasoned pieces of steak and allow to brown on all sides for 2-3 minutes.
What is the difference between Swiss Steak and Salisbury Steak?
Swiss Steak is a steak covered in a tomato-based gravy whereas Salisbury steak is made with ground beef, shaped into a patty and served with a beef broth brown gravy.
Can you Bake Swiss Steak
You can choose to bake Swiss Steak, but keep in mind that to get the tender results you’re looking for, the bake time will be significantly longer than if you were to cook it in your Instant Pot.
To make this Swiss Steak in your oven, you'll need to saute the steak on your stovetop and then transfer it and the other ingredients to an oven-safe dish.
Then cover and bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees.
What to Eat with Swiss Steak?
While Swiss Steak is often served with mashed potatoes and green beans, you can choose anything you want to help switch it up.
Consider some garlic steamed spinach, a pasta salad, white rice, or some Garlic Parmesan Noodles.
What type of Steak is best for Swiss Steak?
Swiss Steak is traditionally made with thick pieces of beef round or chuck shoulder.
You can also use boneless beef chuck or bottom round. You can use thick steak or thin it out as you tenderize it through a process called Swissing (which is where the dish gets its name from.)
Do you grow Tomatoes in your Garden?
I always have an abundance of tomatoes from my garden. You can substitute fresh diced tomatoes for the Stewed Tomatoes in this Swiss Steak recipe.
Wash tomatoes and remove skins by dipping in boiling water for 45 seconds. Skins will peel right off. Then dice and substitute with all the juices in this recipe. YUM! I do like to add a little Salt and Pepper too.
