Rommegrot is a Norwegian traditional porridge made from sour cream and wheat flour.
When finished cooking, rommegrot is topped with a giant pat of butter and sprinkles of cinnamon and is richly satisfying.
You’ll likely see this delicious breakfast at Norwegian cultural fairs as a breakfast or dessert treat (a.k.a. Norwegian cream pudding). Another variation of rommegrot is called flotgrot.

Keto Porridge Recipe–Let’s get cooking!
Yield: 4-6 servings (3 1/2 cups total)

Keto rommegrot is a Norwegian sour cream porridge that's been made gluten free and low carb for the keto diet. If you need a keto cream of wheat replacement, this is the keto porridge recipe you've been waiting for!
Ingredients
- 1 cup almond flour
- 3 tablespoons monkfruit sweetener or 2 tablespoons stevia powder
- 1/2 tablespoon konjac mushroom powder (also called glucommanan powder, for thickening)
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 cup water
- 3/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, plus more for topping if desired
- Pinch pink Himalayan salt
Topping
- 2 tablespoons grass fed butter (or 1/2 tablespoon per serving)
Instructions
- Add almond flour, sweetener, konjac powder, cinnamon, and salt to a small pot on the stove.
- Whisk till combined.
- Add the remaining ingredients and whisk.
- Bring to a boil while whisking. Turn down to a simmer and continue to whisk for about 10 minutes or until the porridge reaches your desired thickness.
- Divide among 4-6 bowls and top with 1/2 tablespoon butter and extra cinnamon if desired.

I’ve been meaning to experiment with xanthan gum for this recipe, but I haven’t yet. If you do, let me know! I love konjac root, though. There are claims it helps with weight loss, but I have no idea if those are founded or not.

I actually haven’t tried freezing this! You can definitely divide it, though. I’ve done it many times. Just be sure to watch it closer and whisk frequently so you don’t burn it.

That’s a great question. I actually haven’t ever tried that before. Like regular cream of wheat, it might thicken and be lumpy, but you could always try reheating it on the stove while stirring and adding a little extra almond milk. Let me know if you try it that way!

I use a tbsp of whole Psyllium Husks, 1 scoop Collagen Peptides and about 1/4 c egg whites as thickener and to up the protein

Oh no! I hate when I run out, haha! You can definitely try it with Greek yogurt. It’s also creamy and has a similar tang to sour cream, but isn’t quite as tangy. So the taste will just be slightly different. Enjoy!

Very cool to see a Norwegian recipe adapted for keto! Just an FYI for those averse or allergic to mushrooms — konjac is from a plant, Amorphophallus konjac, not a mushroom. Somewhere I have a picture of my dad standing next to the flowering structure of another member of this plant genus, Amorphophallus titanum, and it is taller than him by a couple of feet! That one emits an odor to attract flies for pollination, very much like dead shrimp. They are really interesting plants.

Oh my goodness, this is a dead ringer for the taste and texture of traditional grot! I substituted Psyllium Husk Powder and Half & Half for the cream and water because I was out of cream. My go to sweetener is Lakanto Golden and I used their new Lakanto Brown (sugar) substitute on top with the melted butter and cinnamon. What a treat!
