One of many realisations we had over lockdown was how satisfying good quality loungewear is. It’s so easy to overlook but when you’re confined to your home for extended periods of time, comfortable clothing is a lifesaver and can help you feel put together, even when you aren’t going anywhere.
It’s important to have structure and different pieces for different purposes, especially when working from home can make it difficult to separate work and play. So, whether you’re on the hunt for a supremely soft pair of pyjamas or a luxurious robe, these are the brands worth considering.
CDLP
Sweden and good design go hand in hand, everyone knows that. But it doesn’t stop at minimalist fashion and flatpack furniture. Turns out the Swede’s know their way around a nice bit of luxury loungewear too.
Case in point, CDLP. The Scandi label’s HOME collection is crafted in Portugal from supremely soft woven lyocell and designed to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor dressing. This is loungewear you’ll actually want to wear outside of the house.
Hamilton and Hare
Loungewear, nightwear and sleepwear all follow the same comfort- and material-orientated principles at Hamilton and Hare (feature image, top). Simple muted colour palettes, the finest natural fabrics and stylish cuts make for a wonderfully classic range of garments.
Not only are the pyjamas so comfortable that you’ll want to wear them outside, but the travelwear sticks to the same principles while providing a smarter, more presentable alternative to sweats.
Derek Rose
Specialists in comfort-led, off-duty style, Derek Rose should be your first port of call for luxe loungewear. From contemporary ‘lounge trousers’ to classic dressing gowns and pyjamas, Derek Rose use only the finest fabrics and construction techniques to craft garments that look and feel great.
Uniqlo
If you’re on a budget but still want quality, Uniqlo is always a solid bet. Offering a range of high-end fabrics (without the corresponding price points) including 100% Supima cotton as well as brushed flannel and fleece, there’s pieces to suit every body shape and need. The brand’s EZY trousers are a particular highlight, offering the comfort of sweatpants with a sleek athleisure look.
Sunspel
A mainstay of British style since 1860, Sunspel are widely known for their quality fabrics and understated wardrobe basics. Utilising luxurious pima cotton and cashmere, their loungewear essentials feature the same attention to detail and precision design as their everyday pieces.
Available in a variety of stylish colours, the brand’s cotton loopback sweatshirts are a must-own and provide the ideal loungewear staple that can be seamlessly integrated into day-to-day casual outfits.
Hanro
Originally a Swiss knitwear company famed for being pioneers of circular knitting, Hanro have since cemented themselves as a worldwide luxury loungewear brand. A wide variety of high-quality cottons and super-soft materials make up a casual range that features shorts, T-shirts and joggers.
The Night & Day Pyjama Pants are perhaps the perfect Sunday morning trouser.
Desmond & Dempsey
If you want luxury pyjamas then you need to go to a luxury pyjama specialist. Step forward, Desmond & Dempsey. Masters of the eccentric print, choose from the dramatic Sansindo Tiger Print or an equally brilliant Soleia Leopard Print in a range of long or short trousers with matching long sleeve or short Cuban-style tops.
Plainer designs are available but if you’re not allowed to stand out at home, where are you allowed?
Oliver Spencer
For soft and comfortable lounge and nightwear with a stylish edge, consider British designer Oliver Spencer. Sir Paul’s signature stripe is also available in pyjama bottoms and shirt to match, but if you’re after something just as eclectic then try the black ‘Chile’ Jacquard sweatpants; a comfortable but bold choice.
New & Lingwood
Eton College outfitters New & Lingwood might not be your first port of call for loungewear – more likely a double-breasted blazer or occasion wear – but if you want a majestic slippers and dressing gown combo, the sort you could wear with a shirt and bow tie, the brand have what you want.
Extravagant unlined silk dressing gowns are the order of the day here, woven and made in England by mills dating back to the Huguenots. Team with embroidered velvet slippers for the ultimate sartorial loungewear look.
Anderson & Sheppard
A part of its delightful Haberdashery, tailor Anderson & Sheppard offers a superb collection of luxury sleep- and loungewear that epitomises a sumptuous and stylish approach to dressing, even when your eyes are closed.
For peak sartorial nightwear, consider one of their cool gingham shirts with a long vintage cut, made in Italy from 100% cotton.
